Wind like Water

Clarinet Ensemble

I had come up with the idea of this piece back in the Summer of 2022. My family and I have always taken a week-long vacation to a lake town in Michigan. We enjoyed the water, camp fires, and climbing up the nearby sand dunes. In the mornings my dad would take each of us fishing. I would wake up at 5am when the lake was illuminated only by moonlight. Because we were always the first ones out, the water was as smooth as glass. The stillness and the calm of these mornings have served as the inspiration for the first half of this piece.

The second half was created with the players in mind. I wanted something that would harken back to the water, so I turned my ears to Irish folk tunes. Adding a touch of my own flair, as well as some additional influence, the resulting compound meter dance was born. Think "How to Train Your Dragon" with a touch of Grainger.
