Iron Horse
Wind Ensemble/Grade 5
Premiered April 5, 2024 at the CBDNA North Central Division conference in Columbus, Ohio.
The invention of the steam locomotive revolutionized travel and transportation in the early 1800s. Iron horse was a term used to describe the early engines that began to replace the previous labor of horses. The gradual evolution of the steam locomotive resulted in heavier and more powerful machines. The iron horse became bigger and badder.
This 4-minute concert opener is an off-the-rails depiction of the impressive steam engines of the 1940s. Throughout you will hear the sounds of the tracks, cars, and wide open skies. Most of all, you will hear the Iron Horse's blasting horn and roaring engine. Beginning with an explosive opening statement, the train's engine is ignited and takes off at a lightning-fast pace. Moments of beauty, terror, and adventure are felt, and the train never stops.
