Nine-O-Nine

Wind Ensemble/Grade 4

Commissioned by the Fort Wayne Area Community Band

Dr. Scott Humphries, Director

This work is under exclusivity until June 6, 2025

The B-17 "Nine-O-Nine" was a WWII bomber that flew over 140 combat missions in the European theatre. The B-17 bombers themselves, also nicknamed "flying fortresses," are one of the iconic warbirds used in the Second World War. This work is inspired by these incredible machines.

The piece begins with a simulated startup of the Wright radial engines and quickly takes off. Light and fluttering woodwinds are paired with shifting progressions underneath. The excitement builds until the aircraft suddenly bursts through the clouds in shining glory. As the bird approaches the enemy front, tensions rise as enemy fighters appear as specks on the horizon. The ensuing dogfights surrounding the bomber leap from intense moments of peril to moments of triumph. Following a second wave of fighters, the tension grows darker. Suddenly, the bomber falls from the sky.

This work's lyrical section serves as a memorial. While the actual "Nine-O-Nine" flew home following the war, a tribute aircraft crash landed at an airshow in Connecticut in 2019, resulting in the loss of seven lives. Flying these bombers was one of the most dangerous jobs in the Army Air Force during WWII, and it was through the courage and bravery of those that did not fly home that the campaign in Europe found so much success.

I would not have my love and appreciation for old warbirds without my father. He has graciously shared his giddy excitement with my siblings and I, taking us to air shows and sharing interesting photos and history.

Special thanks to the Fort Wayne Area Community Band for commissioning this work and for their hard work in preparation and performance of this piece. "Nine-O-Nine" was commissioned by the Fort Wayne Area Community Band in honor of their 45th anniversary. The work received its world premiere on May 6, 2025.
